Clear your calendar - It's going down! The Brushes with Cancer Art Exhibition and Gala kicks off on May 13th, and you're invited to take part in the festivities. Revel Fulton Market is our meeting spot for a night of fun and excitement. Come one, come all, bring a guest, and hang loose. This is going to be epic.
Brushes with Cancer strategically matches artists with those touched by cancer to create unique pieces of artwork reflective of their journey. Over a period of 4 months, fifty selected pairs will connect in person, via Skype, on the phone or by email. Their relationships are guided and supported by Twist Out Cancer volunteers with the intention of creating a support system for both the artist and subject. The program finishes on a high note with our signature celebratory art exhibition and gala where the artwork is revealed for the fist time.
“Telling my story in this context and through this creative process was better than any kind of therapy,” said Amy, a Brushes with Cancer participant who lost her mother to breast cancer and who is herself both a survivor of kidney cancer and a ‘previvor’ who was diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene."
At the celebratory art exhibition and gala our guests are treated to an evening centered on art, entertainment, storytelling, hope,inspiration and survivorship. The success of the Chicago event has enabled us to roll out three additional Brushes with Cancer events in Ann Arbor, Toronto, and Tel Aviv in 2015 and 2016. This year, in Chicago, we anticipate over 800 attendees at our 4th annual Brushes with Cancer! Register today to secure your spot!

"Time moves slower in sickness - a week feels like a month, six months feels like a few years. Sickness becomes your master, your prison, the only reality you know. All your ideas, philosophies, hopes and desires shrink to a a single mantra, repeated endlessly: "I want to be well". When I recovered from chemotherapy and returned to Health, I was in a state of euphoria. I cried with joy at sunsets and music. Time passes effortlessly and imperceptibly. The world of sickness began to feel like a distant memory. I am left with a new mantra, a gift I keep forever. It is this: "I am well. That is enough." #BrushesWithCancer #brushesto @twistoutcancer

“Every Step of the Way” – Joshua Johnston for Alex Niles “When talking with Alex, several images and scenarios that he used in his meditation and visualization struck me. Being in a green forest looking up at the trees, the importance of soccer and the discipline learned from that in his life, the sound of ocean waves and the fact that he let reminder images of what he so feared show up periodically as well. I tried to include as many elements of his healing as possible so we could have a window of sorts into his journey. On the bottom right is the amorphous black blob of cancer. In the middle are hands supporting and carrying him while letting him still walk and run toward the green land in the upper left. I want to introduce Marie Jarrell. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer over a year ago and has recently completed her treatment. Although she may never know if she will truly be cancer "free", this has not broken her stride.
I chose to depict Marie at her moment of "self-realization". This point in time when retreat was not an option. Instead of running away, she turns with head up and shoulders back to meet her adversary. You can almost hear her say "You will NOT take me off my path. I still have a lot to do."

Last night's #BrusheswithCancer reception was held in Voices Gallery right outside of the oncology ward in University of Michigan Cancer Center. The installment will be there for three months is especially poignant because patients encounter the art everyday and use the space as a quiet meditative area when they travel to and from chemo and radiation. Here, I am standing in the gallery with my artist @jasonfelde who painted this piece to represent my survivor story. #Beautiful

Tonight I took part as a participant in the first-ever #BrushesTO. I was paired with an artist, Renita. We met and i told her about my experience thus far. She is a photographer and created the most amazing portrait. Tonight was the opening gala and I met the man who bought the photograph. He was so excited about it and I was thrilled that he loves it. Me and my family will be a gift to his girlfriend.

"Victory" 30 x 60 Acrylic on Canvas. The colours in this painting reflect Tim's journey from gloom and darkness to the psychedelic colours of happiness and gratitude. They are wound through with quotes from #sufjanstevens "I want to be well" - a song that resonates with Tim, and gave him a break from the isolation of his suffering.
